A self-proclaimed “child of the internet,” Erin M. Riley uses dyed wool and a floor loom to turn selfies and online imagery—sourced from social media and Google—into tapestries. No subject is too taboo for Riley: The Brooklyn-based artist has woven screenshots of pornography, pictures of her own nude body, and still lifes that feature bloody tampons, syringes, guns, drugs, and rogue handbag contents. Riley earned her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston before completing her MFA at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, and Seoul. Riley’s practice highlights varied realities of contemporary womanhood, including drug use, domestic abuse, and online sexual adventures.
