Tom Hancocks — Synthesis and the Weight of the Digital

Tom Hancocks — Synthesis and the Weight of the Digital

by Juan Crocetti

There is a quiet tension in Tom Hancocks’ work between image and object, speculation and permanence. Before these pieces existed physically, they lived without gravity, conceived inside digital space where form could expand freely, untouched by fabrication or material limits. The Synthesis collection, developed as a specific editioned run in collaboration with BOON_EDITIONS, marks the moment when those imagined gestures accept weight.

Rather than translating digital ideas into furniture, Hancocks preserves their instability. Metal structures appear skeletal, almost provisional, while leather volumes feel inflated, soft, and bodily. The objects seem caught between becoming and dissolving. Structure and surface remain in negotiation, as though the works still carry the elasticity of their virtual origin.

Displayed on PASSAGE, the collection enters the gallery’s curatorial program as a presentation of this editioned body of work. While the editions themselves are produced through the artist’s collaboration with BOON_EDITIONS, PASSAGE foregrounds the encounter between object and space, situating the works within a broader conversation about contemporary design and authorship.

Hancocks’ objects offer comfort, although what lingers is their presence, the impression that they have settled into the room long before anyone arrives to use them. Chairs stand like quiet figures awaiting occupation, while tables resemble systems paused in the midst of formation. Each piece carries the memory of its virtual conception while assuming a new material authority.

In placing Synthesis on display, PASSAGE highlights a broader contemporary condition. In a culture saturated with images, the moment an idea assumes physical form carries new weight. These works do not attempt to escape the digital world that shaped them. Instead, they anchor it, allowing viewers to experience something increasingly rare: an idea that has chosen to exist physically.
